This webinar will discuss how fast-growing Cities are identifying and mitigating challenges associated with planning, design and construction of wastewater conveyance infrastructure such as pipelines and lift stations. Typically, Cities have specific budgets allocated for new infrastructure, and rehabilitation and O&M of the existing infrastructure. This presentation will focus on what steps these utilities take to strike a balance between these budgets, how they coordinate with stakeholders both internal and external, and various tools they utilize to support fast paced growth and provide reliable service to their customers. Internal stakeholders include Planning, Engineering, O&M, and Construction Departments and external stakeholders include Developers, Franchise Utilities, TxDOT, NTTA etc. Various tools for managing stakeholders include:
- Conduct regular meetings with Planning and Engineering Departments to determine the appropriate size, and timeline for future developments and CIP projects, and adjust size and project priorities based on realistic timeline of proposed developments
- Based on results of O&M activities (sewer and manhole cleaning and inspection) evaluate rehabilitation versus replacement options. Rehabilitate existing infrastructure where feasible, thereby reduce costs and re-allocate the remaining budget for installing new infrastructure
- Coordinate with Public Works to combine utility improvements with street paving projects to minimize disruption to public and reduce costs
- Schedule quarterly meetings with franchise utilities to avoid conflict of the future pipeline alignment with planned franchise utility installations
- Coordinate with external stakeholders such as TXDOT and NTTA for future roadway/highway widening projects to avoid conflict of future pipeline alignment with planned roadway projects
