This session explores how AI can help wastewater operators move from reacting
to alarms to seeing problems days or weeks ahead. Through modeled examples from the collection system and the treatment plant, attendees will see how sensor data a utility already collects can flag developing blockages and failing lift station pumps. The same data can rank basins by inflow and infiltration, match aeration and chemical dosing to actual conditions, and prepare the plant for storms before they arrive. The session follows a human-in-the-loop approach, in which the licensed operator keeps final authority and AI tools only advise. Participants will leave with practical questions for evaluating AI providers and a clear first project, such as a lift station, that works even for smaller plants with limited IT support.
